Doors - Energy Efficient Doors
Like windows, doors can be made from different materials. These materials have different insulating properties so manufacturers may add additional insulation to the door to improve the energy performance. An important consideration when purchasing a door is how well it is at stopping draughts coming through. The frame should be designed so that it forms an effective seal around the door delivering a good air tight unit.
Some imported doors open out the way rather than in to the hall as is standard with Irish doors. This allows the manufacturers to achieve better draught exclusion.
The addition of glazing to an external door should also be minimised as glass would not have the same insulating value as the main door material.
You could also consider the possibility of adding a draught porch to your house. This would mean that you have effectively two front doors. When you are entering or leaving it should be possible to close one door before you open the other. This will minimise the heat escaping or cold air blowing into your house.
