Home Energy Saving Tips
- Turn down thermostats (20 degrees is regarded as comfortable – 18 in bedrooms)
- Use timers for hot water and space heating to fit in with your requirements
- Switch off lights and appliances when not in use (don’t leave on Standby!)
- Shower rather than bathe
- Use lined curtains or blinds and close them at night
- Put reflective foil behind radiators
- Position fridges and freezers in a cool place away from direct sunlight and heat
- Always wash full loads in your washing machine & dishwasher and set at the lowest possible temperature
- Maintain your heating & hot water boiler to improve efficiency
- Insulate your hot water cylinder
- Draught seal doors, windows and other gaps
- Replace ordinary light bulbs with with energy saving CFLs
- Upgrade the insulation in your attic and walls
- Upgrade central & water heating boilers and controls
- Turn off heating in the parts of the house not used and close that area off
- Buy energy efficient appliances – “A Rated” where possible
- Install renewable energy systems such as solar hot water, wood pellet boilers etc
- Fix leaking taps (especially hot water taps!)
- Recycle where possible to reduce harmful impacts on the environment
- Reduce your use of the car and the next time you change look for the most fuel efficient engine
